The Cockapoo is a mix of a Cocker Spaniel, usually English Working or Show but can also be American, and a Poodle, usually Miniature or Toy.
The breed has been around since the late 1950s although it is not recognised by the Kennel Club.
The Cockapoo was the first of poodle crosses which now includes Goldendoodles, Cavipoos, Yorkiepoos to name a few.
It is widely believed that all Cockapoos are hypoallergenic but this is not always true so do your own research before you jump in to this breed. You may be allergic to a dog’s skin or even their saliva and even the fur cannot be guaranteed not to cause allergies either. The Cockapoo will usually have a low shedding coat which is great when it comes to keeping the carpets clean!
They have a wonderful temperament and are relatively easy to train and make great family pets. Don’t forget that Spaniels and Poodles are both working breeds so these dogs need lots of mental stimulation and exercise to stay balanced and happy. They thrive on human company but can be prone to separation anxiety if this is not managed from a young age.
Whilst they are undeniably cute, this does come with several lifestyle considerations. As an active dog they will get very mucky and will require daily coat maintenance and brushing and regular trips to the groomer.
