Your best friend may well suffer from dog allergies. The excessive licking, biting and scratching that allergies cause can put our best friends at risk of more serious skin infections.

It’s always better to know the possible symptoms so you can treat the problem effectively and efficiently. Other symptoms can include itchy and runny eyes, runny nose and hair loss and/or bald patches.
So what are the common causes of dog allergies?
Flea bites are the number one cause of allergic reactions! The bite of just one flea is enough to send flea-allergic pets into fits of itching and scratching.
Treatment:
Flea control program; monthly spot on or oral medication that kills adult fleas and disrupts the lifecycle of the parasite to prevent more fleas from hatching and maturing.
Pollen, molds, dust mites, storage mites, dander and other environmental irritants that can be inhaled or simply come into contact with skin, noes, ears or eyes.
Treatment:
1; Repeated injections of serums containing allergens to decrease the immune systems sensitivity to them
2; Symptomatic treatment with medication to dampen the pets allergic response.
Ingredients in food that may start an allergic reaction when ingested can cause itchy skin, vomiting and even diarrhoea.
Treatment:
Rigorous and sustained exclusion diets during which time your dog may only be fed a diet that does not contain common allergens like beef, dairy and fish etc. This can take a lot of time to get to the bottom of the problem but is well worth the effort in severe cases.
Remember, if you are ever in any doubt always seek advice from your vet.
