With Autumn upon us I have to say it’s a great time to be a dog walker in Verwood. The early sunshine and even warmer afternoon walks have been such a treat for everyone.
To be able to see all the New Forest animals with hardly anyone else around is such a wonderful experience.
Such wonderful early October days spent walking, Otis, Archie, Ruby and Bruce. We have been on plenty of off lead forest walks which have included Rockford Common, Ringwood Forest, Linford Bottom & North Gorley. To walk around a bend at Rockford Common and to see deer running in the distance is a sight to behold. Fortunately, we were far enough away for the dogs not to take chase, but unfortunately, I was too slow to be able to capture the image on my phone!
The stream at Linford Bottom has water in it again, so the dogs enjoyed a splash around during their walks, such a change from the dried- up earth during the heat of the summer.
We came across pigs in the forest on our drive to our walk in North Gorley, they are released in the forest each autumn to feed on the fallen acorns, which are poisonous to New Forest Ponies and cattle. Up to 600 pigs are released, however we only saw 12 at most!
We spent a very enjoyable Sunday with almost two hours of walking with the Springers in the Fordingbridge Forest at Godshill. They were just as energetic at the end of their walk as they were at the beginning. Particularly enjoyable was the rewarding pint of scrumpy cider for the humans at the Fighting Cocks Pub, Godshill. Dogs are made very welcome, fresh water is provided and dog treats are available on the bar. Not a peep out of them from under the table where they were without doubt the best- behaved dogs there, well done Ruby and Bruce, such a pleasure to be around.
