Great Christmas Dog Walks in Stafford

Cannock Chase Dog Walk

Where to start? Canock Chase offers such a wide variety of dog walks and other activities it hard to know where to begin. The Chase is located between Cannock, Lichfield, Rugely and Stafford and is made up of woodland and open heathland. For the purpose of this guide we are going to focus on Cannock Chase Forest which is managed by Forestry England. For directions with Sat Nav use WS15 2UQ  or OS grid reference SK 018171. Opening hours vary so it’s always best to check the Forestry Commission web site before you visit. All day parking is only £6 and there’s lot’s to do to keep you occupied so you get your money’s worth. There are 4 marked walking trails but you can of course explore away from these as well as a cafe, toilets, picnic area and cycle hire.

Barlaston Downs

Barlaston Downs or Downs Bank is a National Trust site just 2 miles North of Stone, Staffordshire covering about 166 acres. Opening times are generally dawn to dusk but we would advise checking the National Trust web site before you visit.  It’s easy to get to and only about 5 miles from M6 junctions 14 and 15, for Sat Nav use ST15 8UU. Facilities include a number of mapped walks, picnic tables and ample parking. Of course dogs are welcome but please do follow the country side code and keep them under close control around live stock and wildlife.

Dimmings Dale

This one is a bit further afield being about a 45 minute drive from Stafford City Centre. This wonderful woodland walk is situated near Alton in Churnet Valley and is managed by the Forestry Commission.  Parking can be found at the Ramblers Retreat a a dog-friendly restaurant with a fountain and water bowls for thirsty dogs, and huts to sit in on rainy days. There’s also an outside serving hatch so it doesn’t matter if you’re a bit muddy. This one is well worth a visit.
