Why do Dogs Roll in Fox Poo?

One of my dogs appears to relish in rolling on dead and decomposing  animals such as mice or birds. The only prerequisite seems to be the smell. It’s very much a case of the smellier the better!

This behavior starts to make more sense if we turn the clocks back a couple of thousand years. As we know dogs are carnivorous hunters. It is believed that the instinct to cover themselves in foul smelling stuffs was done to mask their own scent. This enabled them to stalk and catch prey before they were sniffed out!!

So now we know why dogs roll in fox poo the questions becomes how do we get rid of the smell?

There are lots of old wives tails such as tomato ketchup. I have never know this to work and regardless, would not dream of covering my dog in a food stuff. The best solution is to use a dog specific shampoo. Never use human shampoos as these are not formulated for dogs and can strip the natural oils from the coat.  Having tried and tested a number of different options we recommend using Wild Wash.
