Meet The Breed: The Korthals Griffon.
The Korthals Griffon is also know as the Wirehaired Pointing Griffon. This majestic, if not scruffy, breed is still rare in the UK with under 300 examples registered.

This breed was originally developed by Mr. Eduard Karel Korthals, a Dutch National who later stettled in Hesse (Germany) in the second half of the 19th Century.
Catagorised as an all purpose hunting dog or HPR (Hunt-Point-Retrieve) they are an adaptable breed than can turn their “paw” to a number of activities. They need patience, commitment, gentle handling and consistent and proper training (this often includes the owner – no matter how experienced). They tend to be gentle and kind with children, toddlers and other animals. They are a ‘proper’ sporting dog and cover a lot of ground easily and quickly. They need owners with experience along with time and dedication and should not be taken on without due consideration.
The Korthals Griffion come in variety of colours. Steel grey with liver brown patches, liver roan, white and brown or variations of all three.
Life Span: 12 – 15 years
Characteristics: A versatile and loyal hunting and pointing bird dog.
Dog Breed Group: Gundog
Height: 51 cm – 61 cm
Appearance: A large and long head, with large rounded eyes covered with eyebrows and complemented with a beard. The nose is always brown. The neck is long and body well proportioned and muscular.
Coat: Harsh and coarse with fine, dense undercoat. Never curly or woolly
We had the pleasure of one of these wonderful dogs, Wilf, who came to My Best Friend West Oxfordshire for Home Boarding. I’m sure you’ll agree he’s a fine example of the breed.
